Schlegeis via ferrata- an extraordinary experience
You love via ferratas, but you want to try out something different to the normal ones? Here’s a special tipp: You should try the climbing route on a dam in Schlegeis/Austria. Sounds interesting? Oh, it definitly is!
My boyfriend and I are currently on a roadtrip through Austria and Italy.
We don’t know yet what we gonna see this week, because we actually had a perfect plan for our week on the road, but unfortunately the weather was worse than expected, so we had to cancel the plan and be creative.
In the end we started our roadtrip one day later than planned and instead of a two-day hiking tour in the Ennstal, we decided to start in Mayrhofen to do the Schlegeis via ferrata.
This was not a bad decision at all. Quite the reverse!
I guess the following photos will give you an idea of how great and exciting the first day was. 🙂
We started our tour from Mayrhofen’s train station and then took a bus up to Schlegeis (1782 m).
Once in Schlegeis you need to walk down to the lowest point of the dam to start your tour.
The Schlegeis via ferrata isn’t a very hard tour when it comes to strength and endurance. It’s B on the difficulty level (A-E). But you should definitely not underestimate the height of the dam.
Be sure to be absolutely free from giddiness! It’s not like a normal kind of via ferrata where trees, mountains or anything like that is at least anywhere under your feet. This feels like flying, ‚cause there’s nothing! 😉
At the beginning you start vertically up the dam and after several meters the tour goes diagonal right toward the top. There are two platforms where you can take a break or – like me – take pictures 😉
If you are an experienced climber there is also a more difficult option for you. (Level C/D)
But I have to gain a few more muscles, before I can try this 🙂
Now I have nothing more to say about the Schlegeis via ferrata, because I guess my pictures will tell you the rest.
Good to know
